White Sky #2 picks up in Pleasanton, where Violet’s dad is being offloaded from the truck. It turns out that another person this group had had around, Walter, had apparently escaped, and their priority becomes finding him ASAP.
Violet, meanwhile, was unable to go through with her initial exit strategy, instead asking the voice for help. It points her toward a tunnel.
As she reaches the destination, though, she encounters a ghost by the door. It’s offering “safety”, but isn’t all that trustworthy. He also says that she doesn’t want to go through that door, but she opens it anyway, to find…
A human meat locker (sans refrigeration)! She’s, of course, sickened by the sight and expresses sympathy for those inside. And then she hears the voice again. She follows it to find a rather gaunt man strapped to a table, and realizes that he was the one that’s been guiding her this whole time.
She frees him and they start heading for a second exit, since they both know about the ghost at the main door. He reveals that his name is Walter.
They get topside again, when Walter tells Violet that he knows Lewis’s guys are in the tunnel now. So…yep, time to run for it. They’re seen soon enough, and Walter’s pursuers chase them down…
But then Walter tells Violet to hide, because they’re coming, as his back arches and his eyes go blank.
So, at least one worldbuilding aspect is confirmed as of White Sky #2: we’re dealing with a ghost apocalypse. And it seems that there are two varieties of them: the normal kind (which seems to be the guy in the suit that Violet encounters at the door) and the fiery ones, like what came up at the end of the prior issue.
I like the ghost designs so far, as well. The slightly more benign ones, if the guy in the suit is any indication, is more human in appearance, until agitated. Then they become creepier. Their text? White on a black field, with an appropriately ghostly outline. Then the worse ones…hooded figures, flames everywhere…Both their own degree of freakish.
Now, I’ve definitely seen instances before of the previously-dead coming back in some capacity and ruining things for the living. With a worldwide scale, it’s usually zombies. Vampires would also be expected. But having it be ghosts? Inspired choice, there. It makes me wonder where it started and how, really.
Speaking of curiosity surrounding the supernatural aspects of this title, I’m looking forward to finding out more about Patrick. Between 1) being aware of Violet in the first place, right down to her name, without being in the same space as her, 2) being able to communicate with her at some distance, 3) his awareness of things he wouldn’t be able to see from right where he is, and 4) that final panel in the issue itself, it’s looking like he’s some variety of psychic.
The guys at Pleasanton seem extremely invested in keeping a hold on him, so I’m wondering how many people like him are there are out there in this world. And did that somehow have some bearing on how the ghostpocalypse began? I’m hoping to learn more as it goes along.
It’s shown that there’s another threat to deal with in this world, as well. Aside from the two varieties of ghost and the less-than-pleasant denizens of Pleasanton, we’ve got (possible) cannibals. Now, I say “possible” because it’s clear the victims were human, but we don’t see who or what’s been doing the eating. There may be other types of ghouls involved in this whole thing, or the especially bad ghosts. Either way, it’s not the Pleasanton folks that’re doing it, because they’re just as put-off by the human remains as Violet was. Maybe without as much of the sympathy or loss-of-lunch, but it’s still horrific enough to give them pause.
Final Thoughts
A fine cross between a post-apocalyptic tale and a ghost story, White Sky #2 is showing a good amount of promise so far. The story’s getting more and more intriguing, and a little bit more about the current apocalypse is revealed. Hoping to learn more soon.
