In Billbury, PA, we see a couple of shadowy figures watching the comet. They’re focusing the light, and the next thing we know, something’s struggling to get out of a box…
A few days later, in the present, Dean is chasing Sam down. Sam insists on going off alone to find out for sure just what he is. Steff intends on preserving her father’s body for the next time the comet shows up, in hopes that they can find the actual Lichtrager by then.
Steff and Dean hide out at a hotel for the night, discussing Windler’s notes (which Sam took), the toll that Windler and Sam have taken on both of them, and Dean sarcastically brings up doing an online search of “resurrections” and “Tuesday night” which…actually yields some viable results and leads the pair to a clinic in Pennsylvania. Sam, it seems, had also had the same idea, as he’s there as well.
It turns out that in the box in the prologue was a cat that’d been hit by a car and was miraculously brought back to life the night of the comet. They investigate Herker Mansion next, since that seems connected.
There, they learn that Herker Jr. has revived his father…but he’s bitter enough about the old man’s actions in life that he hasn’t let him out of the coffin. And that’s when the real Lichtrager shows up. He does, in fact, look a lot like Sam, and reiterates that no, Sam is not one of his kind. And that death is inevitable, and just has a bit of a smarmy air overall. Sam punches him, Herker Sr takes a pickaxe to the Lichtrager’s chest, and Sam walks off on his own again, telling Dean and Steff to just enjoy whatever time they have.
So, I had heard there would be a spinoff coming soon involving the Winchesters being separated. I had honestly wondered if it would be going from this specific timeline or if they planned it for further along in the series, when one of them had died (which…hey, separation right there). This being the final installment of this specific run, it’s obvious now that they’re going from this timeline, with Sam having gone off alone to figure out just what he is.
But not sure if he’s truly alone for this: he may or may not have taken the haunted car with him, so that’s making me wonder if his spinoff will involve him searching for his identity, running into various supernatural shenanigans along the way, with occasional help from the car.
Once again, we also see that Dean and Steff seem to have some attraction to each other. They do have a bit in common, despite having very different upbringings. It probably wouldn’t last, but there’s just something adorable about those two together.
And speaking of adorable, Chipper the Miracle Cat? Cutest freaking thing in this whole series! And her resurrection shows the difference between a Lichtrager’s reanimation abilities and a more zombie-like deal. Chipper was acting just like a normal kitty after being brought back rather than like something out of Stephen King.
I do wonder if Herker Sr. wasn’t entirely thrilled about being brought back in the first place. Some souls tend to resent being yanked from their eternal rest because someone decided they needed to come back. His son seemed to bring him back out of revenge. And what’s one of his first out-of-the-coffin acts? Planting a pickaxe in the chest of the smarmy bastard that brought him back.
The Lictrager only shows up for brief moment, but in that brief moment, he comes across as quite smug. Kind of like what one would expect from a guy that could raise the dead if he so chose every seven years.
Final Thoughts
Supernatural #10 brings the Lichtrager story to a satisfying end, and I’m eager to see what’s next on the horizon.
