In this review of Superman Unlimited #11, we finally get to meet Master Txyz and discover his major impacts on the past, present, and future of Jon Kent.

Superman Unlimited #11 opens with a couple pages of recap on how Jon Kent was born, became Superboy, was trapped in the future, came back aged up, and took over for Clark as Superman.
We’re then introduced to Master Txyz, a Fourth Dimensional Demon, who is able to control time. He bounces Jon around through Smallville’s past and future. He floods Jon’s mind with all of time and space, trying to get him to snap. Txyz knows that Jon will destroy him in the future, so the demon is attempting to take Jon out first.
When that doesn’t do the trick, Txyz focuses on Jon’s “meaningless” life. He shows him the sadness of Lois and Clark missing out on seeing him grow up, the failure of his relationship with Jay, and the disappointment in taking a backseat as Superman when Clark returns. Txyz begins to get into Jon’s head, telling him that he’s pathetic and that he amounts to nothing.
Pushed to the edge, Jon rips off his costume and chooses his own identity. He grabs the costume of a far future warrior that Txyz was using to attack him. He puts it on and becomes Tomorrow Man.
The Demon is stunned because he realizes that he’s just created the version of Jon Kent that will eventually destroy him. He gives up his attempt to eliminate Jon and rips open space time to give Jon a time gift. As Txyz disappears and Superman Unlimited #11 comes to an end, a kid comes through the portal. It’s none other than the younger version of Jon Kent, as he was before he left for the future.
Analysis
After a couple of teases in Superman Unlimited #9 and Superman Unlimited #10, Dan Slott finally gives us a Master Txyz full reveal. I’m hoping that this character wasn’t created just to be a plot device to get the young version of Jon Kent back into the storylines. With the ability to control time, Txyz comes across as a powerful foe and it would be a waste to have him appear only once.
I remember the backlash when Jon was aged up a few years ago. Many readers enjoyed the 10-year old version and didn’t appreciate having so much of his life skipped over. It looks like Slott is giving back that opportunity by having young Jon return. I’m not sure about the temporal mechanics involved in this decision, but safe to say that it’s some kind of version of time travel that allows for both versions of Jon to exist at the same time.
I also like that older Jon takes on his own identity in Superman Unlimited #11. I always found it a bit weird to have both him and Clark referred to as Superman, even when both were around. Plus, his new costume is an interesting blend of a far future Superman and Batman style, keeping the primary colors, but blending the logo into a vague “T” shape while adding a utility belt (for whatever reason he’d need that) to his waist. There’s a fantastic variant cover by Lucio Parrillo for this issue that shows off a cool design of Jon’s new look.
The artwork in Superman Unlimited #11 looks good. Artist Lucas Meyer and Colorist Giuliano Peratelli combine to give us some well-drawn and colored characters. The design for Txyz isn’t the most physically imposing, but he certainly has the look of an evil demon. Some of my favorite pages in this issue are the splash page early on where Jon is fighting Txyz with a black hole in the background and later in the story with the Tomorrow Man reveal.
Final Thoughts
Superman Unlimited #11 is a step up from the previous two entries. It moves the story forward in a couple of major ways, setting up multiple potential storylines in the future. Fans of both younger and older Jon Kents will be excited for this one. Have fun, comic lovers!
