After being taken into custody by undercover Andorian security agent Lyna Taval at the end of Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century #1, Ensign Harry Deubert now tries to convince her he wants to help take down Captain Miller, commander of Starfleet’s Section Null.
Miller’s crew comes for Lyna and Deubert, forcing the Andorian to fight back. She gets overwhelmed by Miller’s forces until Deubert comes to her aid. After taking out the attackers, Lyna reluctantly arms Deubert and they make their way to the shuttlecraft on Marianas Outpost.
Security guards slow them down, but the pair is able to board a shuttlecraft and escape. Meanwhile, Captain Miller sends out a broadcast with news that Lyna and Deubert are traitors to Starfleet and have bombed the outpost, setting them up.
Upon contacting her Andorian handler, Saber, Lyna discovers that Miller has already murdered the handler. Infuriated by this, Lyna begins a plan to board Miller’s ship, ending Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century #2.

Analysis
Writer Gerry Duggan spins an action-packed tale of murder and corruption within the security division of Starfleet. Captain Miller, a human asset planted years earlier by the Romulans, is now the head of a mafia-style group (Section Null) and he commands them through fear. At one point in the story, he opens an airlock with a crewman inside, ripping the poor guy apart, while another crewman has to watch.
Duggan creates an equally compelling character in the Andorian agent, Lyna. She’s smart, can handle herself in combat, and is now highly motivated to take out Miller.
Rounding out the main characters in this story is Harry Deubert. He’s not the ideal Starfleet ensign, as Miller literally pulled him out of jail to work for Section Null, but he knows the difference between right and wrong.
Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century #2 moves fast and is full of brutal, gory moments. Yes, that’s right, this Star Trek story doesn’t shy away from blood, guts, and bodies sliced in half by phaser fire. It may actually be a little shocking to fans, as we don’t usually get this level of carnage onboard Federation ships.
Scott Buoncristiano brings Duggan’s story to life with his excellent artwork. The panelwork is fairly standard rectangles and squares, making the sequences and story easy to follow. There’s plenty of detail in character expressions, as well as the background imagery. Colorist Charlie Kirchoff makes great use of dark-colored backgrounds and bright-colored characters. This makes the characters pop off the page, keeping the focus on them.
Final Thoughts
Star Trek: Red Shirts – Ghost of the 21st Century #2 is full of action and intrigue and features some unusual characters in familiar settings. It’ll be interesting to see how Lyna and Deubert carry out the next phase of the plan to eliminate Miller. Have fun, comic lovers!
