As Smile for the Camera #4 begins, Noa and Ivy arrive for a meeting with Purple. Ivy seems to be more in shock over what happened to Lena the day before than Noa, who was there. When Purple shows up, he says that they’re going to Paris early and will be able to rest a bit. And the suite he’s booked for them is free.

As the pair pack, Noa reveals that she’s all about the model life. And accuses Ivy of being ungrateful. Feels that the harassment and all are just part of their dues. But Ivy’s still immensely concerned about the abusive nature of the biz and the fact that Noa literally watched another model die the day before.

Ivy meets with Alana to discuss the story they’re building, and they try to piece it all together. Ivy’s sure that Perry has something to do with it, but they need proof. So the plan becomes to record Perry saying something incriminating on tape. Before leaving for the train, Ivy asks Alana about the death Cami had witnessed back at the start.

During the train ride, Noa’s hallucinations start, and Ivy apologizes for earlier. In the suite, they bond a bit over their reasons for joining. And Noa starts seeing the fallen…

At the casting call, Noa is cruelly rejected and Ivy gets the gig. But Noa’s not mad: she’s been selected for an interview with her favorite fashion magazine!

But there are a few things wrong…1) Noa’s being grilled about her fading career, 2) she physically can’t leave the office, and 3) when told of the interview later by Ivy, Purple reveals that the magazine, La Silhouette, has been out of print for years.

Ivy, at a party, gets a call (which also gets her away from Perry), and rushes to the building where Noa’s “interview” is to be held. She gets there just in time to watch Noa—making the prerequisite full eye contact—as the floor gives out beneath her and she falls to her death.

So, the way the Smile universe works, as we’ve seen by now, is that the tension doesn’t necessarily come from the question of who makes it out alive, but rather how will the Entity toy with their current victim. And damn, did it really mess with Noa, here in Smile for the Camera #4.

The others had a slower build-up, the terror kicking in rather quickly. But Noa kept brushing off her trauma as just that kind of stress that comes with the territory she’d worked so hard to reach. It’s not until the train ride that she’s actually shaken, with the line between reality and Entity blurring as she’s asked for her ticket.

Loved the little glimpses the two remaining models give of their backstories, as well. Noa has made it clear that she’s all about the modeling life, but would rather not deal with the debt. The Entity is all about the psychological warfare, and Noa’s commitment to the model life proved to be fertile ground for its ultimate attack against her. It had enough knowledge about the publication to know it could be used against Noa, and that it could lie about them still being in business as opposed to fully extinct.

Unsure if the final chapter will include Perry facing charges. While the readers know that he’s not necessarily the cause of all these deaths, there’s still the harassment aspect to him. And with Ivy planning to speak with him and ambush him,…the probability of the Entity attacking in the middle of that is high. Possibly even as its final act toward her, since Perry would be in the same room.

Once more, I’m enjoying the artwork for Smile for the Camera #4. I always love expression work, but they really did well on this one. Without a word from either Noa or Ivy, we can see their thoughts about Purple’s goodwill gesture. Noa looks at him with nothing short of admiration, whereas Ivy’s just like: “Yeah, pull the other one…”. And when Noa’s denying any trauma, we get some beautiful eye-rolls in there.

Final Thoughts

The Entity is just as twisted as ever, with this 4th installment of Smile For The Camera. Some wonderful character building, a chilling reveal, and it all sets things up for a dramatic conclusion.
