Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story #3 opens with Sophie speaking with the police about what’d happened on the balcony. At Violet’s insistence (and because she wasn’t quite sure what really happened, herself), she claims that it was an accident. River tries getting Karma to lay off on bringing any new pledges in for a while, but she insists on keeping things going.
A bit later, as she’s discussing the plan with Violet (and how she’d rather not have to go back to the sorority house), Sophie hears a knock at the door. She goes to answer, when a bag gets thrown on her head and she’s pulled from her dorm. When she’s able to remove it, she finds herself (and a few other pledges) caged and in the middle of the snowy woods, with the Sisters nearby. The girls are grilled with questions, Violet telling Sophie just to say yes to anything they ask. At one point, though, she gives a denial of having done anything wrong, earning a kick to the cage that sends her sliding down a hill.
Panicking and thinking that they’re accusing her of killing Penelope, she tries to run. As it turns out, though, this is just what passes for the average Phase One of the pledge process. Sophie still isn’t sure about this whole thing, but presses on, getting into the vehicle with a group of other Sisters.
Along the trip back to campus, Sophie is introduced to Anika, who had pledged with Violet. She talks about how she was getting close to Vi, how she was drinking of her own volition, and how having Sophie there is like having Vi…
Violet takes over at that point, Sophie as a vessel, and attacks everyone in that van before having her jump out before it explodes.
Sophie realizes she’s been used, calls Violet on this whole thing…and then blacks out again to find that she’s apparently assaulted a cop, stole a gun…Another blackout later, and she’s being charged with murder.
So, Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story #3 definitely got a bit insane. Seriously, those last few pages exemplify “Well, THAT escalated quickly…!” in a handy visual manner. This is coming on the heels of a sequence that definitely shows some parallels between a sorority and a full-on cult.
The initiation sequence on its own definitely shows why Sophie would not be about the Greek Life. When someone’s pledging, they’re no longer allowed to be their own individual person. It’s all about the Sisterhood once that acceptance comes through. The question that Sophie doesn’t answer “correctly” is the one about remaining loyal to the other girls. In a story concerning a vengeful ghost and possession, the fact that this sort of initiation is apparently the norm for this sorority and not a means of getting revenge on their part manages to be the most chilling thing about it.
The reveal that Violet has been using her best friend as a means for revenge…it was something that had to come up sooner or later. She would, of course, have wanted revenge for how she died. But part of me wonders how bad she’d really wanted it to be. She mentions, in Penelope’s case, having wanted to reach out, but losing control. Was she actually in control of her actions and is now lying about it, or was the energy that brought her back in this form naturally malevolent enough that it latched onto and exacerbated that vengefulness?
Two issues left of this story, and the next one is certain to pick up at the police station. And it’s not like Sophie will have the easiest time explaining her situation (because how does someone explain: “I had my best friend brought back and she keeps possessing me” without calls for a padded room?) to the police. Either way, here’s looking forward to issue 4.
Final Thoughts
Sisterhood: A Hyde Street Story #3 is a tale of revenge becomes a story of betrayal, making the reader wonder if this is what it’d take to sever the friendship between Sophie and Violet. This one really brought the intensity, and it doesn’t feel like it’s about to slow anytime soon. Issue 4 can’t come soon enough.
