SAN DIEGO, CA – Robert Kirkman, the acclaimed creator behind Invincible and The Walking Dead, brought a flurry of exciting announcements to his spotlight panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 on Thursday , revealing new casting, comic book revivals, and details about upcoming projects.
Fans of the hit animated series Invincible received several major revelations: first, the acclaimed animated series has already been approved for a fifth season at Amazon before the premiere of the fourth season. Kirkman also made a surprised announcement in revealing that actor Matthew Rhys (The Americans) has joined the cast to voice both Dinosaurus and his alter ego, David, in Invincible Season 4. Kirkman praised Rhys’s ability to modulate his performance, creating a remarkable contrast between the two characters. Visuals of Dinosaurus from the show were shared to those in attendance.
When asked by someone in attendance about the difference between the show and the comic, Kirkman explained that changes are made to enhance emotional impact, brutality, and narrative flow. He noted that animation quality is expected to improve as the seasons continue.
New News On The Comic Front
Fans of the comic book series Capes (set in the Invincible universe) were surprised with the reveal that the series Kirkman first in 2003 would be coming back in 2026 with a new #7 after the release of the re-reprint of the original miniseries. This goes along with what Kirkman is currently doing in the pages of Battle Beast in the recent expansion of comics within the Invincible Universe.

The renowned writer also provided details of his new project Skinbreaker, a project he is collaborating with artist David Finch on. Skinbreaker is a sci-fi fantasy action book. The first issue, which marks the first time the two creators have worked with one another, releases to comic book shop everywhere on September 24, 2025.
Attendees of the Robert Kirkman panel received an exclusive black and white ashcan preview of the first 16 pages of Skinbreaker #1, signed by Kirkman himself. They also received an exclusive variant cover of Battle Beast #1.

In Transformers news, Kirkman talked about his excitement for taking over the Energon Universe series in October from current writer Daniel Warren Johnson. “No one is as upset about Daniel leaving than I am,” Kirkman told the crowd. However, he is excited about the work he and new artist Dan Mora has done and will do on the series. The first issue by Kirkman and Mora takes place with issue #25, set to release to comic shops everywhere on October 8, 2025.

Kirkman talked about other Energon Universe news, such as Void Rivals actions figures being sold by toymaker Hasbro (they debuted at SDCC Thursday). He then jumped into a short Q&A session for those who could get their questions in (and their books signed).
The Robert Kirkman panel concluded with the writer thanking fans for their support and expressing his gratitude for his career milestones, including Invincible being one of his most successful books to date.
