One Piece: Ace’s Story Vol. 1, titled “Formation of the Spade Pirates,” sets sail with the adventures of Luffy’s fiery older brother, Portgas D. Ace. Here’s a closer look at what the volume offers and some potential drawbacks:

Some strengths that it has is that it dives into Ace’s past as this volume fills in the gaps between Ace leaving his hometown and joining the Whitebeard Pirates. Fans get to see Ace’s early struggles, his motivations for becoming a pirate, and the formation of his own crew, the Spade Pirates. Another strength is that it also focuses on character relationships. We get to know Ace’s crewmates, specifically Thatch, his first mate. This provides a deeper understanding of their bond and the dynamics within the Spade Pirates. Another strength that is huge is that it also includes the classic One Piece world. The familiar world of One Piece is present with its unique settings, devil fruits, and exciting encounters.

Some weaknesses it has are noticeable however. One is its limited scope, since it’s a side story, the plot might feel less consequential compared to the main One Piece narrative. It might not significantly impact the overarching story. Another weakness is its narrative distance as the story is told from the perspective of Deuce, a member of Ace’s crew, rather than Ace himself. This can create a slight disconnect for readers who want to be right in Ace’s headspace. The pacing and action is another one as some readers might find the pacing a bit slow, particularly compared to the fast-paced adventures in the main series. The volume might have less action compared to what you typically expect from One Piece.

Overall, One Piece: Ace’s Story Vol. 1 is a decent read for die-hard One Piece fans who crave any additional lore or backstory on characters they love. It offers a glimpse into Ace’s early journey and the camaraderie within the Spade Pirates. However, those expecting a high-stakes adventure with intense action sequences might be left wanting.
