Chapter 4: Family Reunion

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 opens just before the Green Ranger arrives on the moon. Olivia Hart looks and finds the Green Power morpher and morphs and teleports at the same time. Now we see the Green Ranger. She recognizes her mother and that surprises everyone else. Selina quickly recovers and attacks Olivia, she dops the dragon dagger. Billy suggests Kimberly use it to disrupt the shield imprisoning the other rangers.

The shield goes down and the team engages the putties. Kimberly goes to help her daughter and both are beaten down, Olivia loses her morpher. Finsgter retrieves it and selena enters the machine as the other rangers dispose of the last putties. Olivia forces Selina out of the machine leaving Olivia in the beam. This brings in Tommy Oliver.

Olivia is shocked and the other rangers are overjoyed but Selina uses this opportunity to morph using the Yellow Morpher into the Yellow evil ranger. Selina moves in to kill Tommy and the others move to protect him. Finster augmented with his putty attacks Kimberly and Olivia saves her and the two gather the morphers. Olivia and Kimberly morph and Kimberly as the Pink

Ranger engages Selina while Olivia stabs monster Finster in the back. She gives the remaining morphers to Jason, Billy, and Zach and they morph and enter the fight with Selina.

Olivia is knocked out of the battle and she gives Tommy the Green morpher. This is the first time Tommy finds out he has a daughter. He morphs into the Green Ranger and the five remaining Power Rangers unite to face off with Yellow Selina. Kimberly notches an arrow to kill the witch and Tommy recognizes the witch”s name. He tells her that Rita saved him because he saved Selina when she was a young child. This confuses Selina and she teleports out. Tommy asks the others what is going on.

Later The rangers discuss what they are going to do now. Kimberly gives her morpher to Olivia making her the new Pink Ranger. Tommy agrees to train his daughter and the others make their decision. Zach and Billy do not want to become full time rangers again and Jason agrees to join only if Tommy becomes the leader. The only thing needed now is a Command Center.

Selina arrives in the command center and rages at the ruins she removes her helmet and is faced with a female White Ranger looking for Zordon.

Analysis

The art in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 is fantastic in this issue. The fight scenes are dynamic. The rangers show off their skills more unmorphed than they do morphed but there is still the satisfactory panel of the Rangers morphed and in a dynamic pose. It is a shame that there is not Yellow Ranger as Selina co-opted that power in the end.

This leads to the big continuity error. In the mythos of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Zordon gave the powers to the original team. The green ranger was empowered by Rita but broke her spell. Zordon’s explanation is that the power chose Tommy. When the old rangers left and now ones were chosen Zordon imbued the replacements with that power. In the Once and Always Special, Min tried to become the new Yellow Ranger after Trini’s death but she was unable to morph until she took the blast meant for Billy, then she got the power.

My question is how did Selina gain access to the Yellow Power and as a result morph into a Yellow Ranger with a different suit design. In the same token how did Olivia immediately morph into the Green Ranger. She was clearly not effective in battle, she did not gain the skills from the Morphin Grid as the others did. Even a non combatant in Billy became an impressive fighter when he morphed in the beginning of the series.

Despite these questions, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return #4 might have been the best issue in this mini. Mainly because by far this has the most action. Morphed fights and an unmorphed fight with Putties that we unfortunately did not see much of as the focus was on Olivia. The cliffhanger at the end is interesting. A White Ranger showing up looking for Zordon who has been dead for 20 years facing a new evil but confused Yellow Ranger. I am interested in this development but time will only tell if there will be a continuation.

Final Thoughts

Questions still loom about this plot but the fight sequences were entertaining and yes we finally got them.
