Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #122 – The Story
The story opens in the Void, Ari, the leader has locked the Ranger Slayer in the brig. Kimberly brings hope of more rangers which Ari wants to stop so they can remain under Dark Specter’s radar. The other remaining Solar Rangers do not agree with their leader. Note the Orange Solar Ranger has been corrupted, we saw this in issue 120. Blue and Yellow free Kimberly from the brig and they are quickly confronted by Ari. Ari and Kimberly morph and fight each other.
In the pocket dimension, Billy wakes up. He is being held there by Zordon after he destroyed one of the power eggs in the last issue. Zordon tries to understand why Billy did what he did. Zordon reminds Billy of the danger they are all facing, the Void is isolated, Angel Grove is trying to heal, Kyndall and Phantom Ranger fight to save the barrier and the last egg and Zedd is faced with an overpowered Zeo Crystal. Billy insists he did what he had to do, he can fix the Grid.
In the void Ari gets the upper hand over Kimberly and she is soon faced with Ari’s adopted daughter. This calms everyone down and the two women sit down to talk. Kimberly convinces Ari to accept help.
On earth Matt and Aisha escort Billy to Kyndall. She chastises him about his actions. In Angel GroveTaylor trains the unmorphed rangers and the civilians to fight. Bulk gets a crush on Taylor. Jason also sees that Trini and Zach are getting close. He and Taylor are interrupted by Alpha 5. Dark Specter attacks with the corrupted rangers and putties. Jason clears the civilians while the rangers morph. The civilians enter the fight but they are assisted by the arrival of the Hyperforce Rangers with their new found reinforcements. The Rangers unit to face the enemy.
In the Command Center Billy and Kyndal watch the fight on the Viewing Globe. Billy wants to get out there to help, Phantom is not so sure. Zordon uses Serpentera to attack Dark Specter’s ship. The leader of Prometheus is enraged. Billy is confused, Grace Sterling modified it shouldn’t her organization be able to stop it? This inrages the Prometheus leader, who told them about Grace. Billy realizes that Grace actually died in 1969, she did not survive the mission on the moon. Billy hand the other Rangers have been duped all along. Ari transports to presumably aid the Ranger on Earth. This story will be concluded in Darkest Hour #1.
Analysis
We return to the original artists in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #122. It is a welcome sight. The art is great in this issue. Each character has their look about them. The only issue I see is with Tommy. Since he is not part of the main action that is forgivable.
Finally this story moves forward. The Rangers move closer if not entirely to offense. We finally see a resolution of the Hyperforce subplot. They finally return to Angel Grove with a myriad of Rangers mainly for easter egg and appearance purposes but the team finally expands to a near army force.
The really big reveal is the death of Grace in 1969. Billy and the others have been duped all this time. The question remains for what end was the duplicate working for Dark Specter or Lord Zedd all along? That question may not be easily answered as the duplicate is dead. The real question is how did the Rangers and Zordon not know of the real fate of Grace Sterling? There is a memorial I presume in Promethea to honor them. All the times the Rangers and Billy in particular were in Promethea, how did they not come across this memorial?
Final Thoughts
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #122 is definitely an improvement both is the great art and fby finally moving this story forward to the next concluding issue.
