MMPR #118 — The Story

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #118 begins as Ranger Zedd along with a small contingent of non corrupted Rangers survey the shrinking barrier around Bandora Castle. It is not only the Rangers that are staging a defense. Zedd’s putties are also attempting to reinforce the barrier.

In the command center, other Rangers — Billy, Kimberly, Phantom Ranger, and Ranger Slayer — discuss their options. Soon a disagreement between the Phantom Ranger and Ranger Slayer erupts to be quelled by Zordon. This is interrupted by Alpha detecting a portal on the moon with the viewing globe. Mistress Vile has arrived on the scene but he is not alone. The White Ranger returns to the battlefield fighting alongside Mistress Vile.

On the moon another portal opens and Dark Specter comes through. He immediately engages Mistress Mistress Vile while the White Ranger engages the corrupted Power Rangers. The Black Omega Ranger prepares to go out to help his friend. Trini, the Red Omega Ranger tries to stop him fearing he could be de-morphed and become corrupted himself.

At Promethea, the humans train to fight. Jason and Taylor are informed that Eltar has fallen. Bulk and Skull hear this and they are worried about Candice. There is no word about her fate. The two are resting and lamenting that they are not Power Rangers. Jason walks to them and tells them that they have the spirit of Power Rangers and they would make great Rangers.

In the middle of the fight on the moon, a ship arrives and the Ranger Slayer arrives. She draws the fight away for a weakened White Ranger and she forces him through the barrier to the safe zone. She is attacked by Dark Specter and she jumps through the barrier leaving Mistress Vile alone. She is getting overwhelmed and Zedd attacks, bringing Rita back through the barrier and disappearing with her. Dark Specter tries to follow but is stopped by the barrier. Dark Specter evacuates leaving the battlefield.

Back on Earth, Billy tends to Tommy’s wounds. Soon Kimberly arrives and the she and Tommy embrace and kiss.

Elsewhere, Zedd is with Rita. He has given the witch mercy. Zedd woos Rita and the two embrace,

In Angel Grove, at the Juice Bar, Zack, Trini, and Jason reunite as the original Omega Rangers. They decide to hold each other. Later Trini is in thought. She is thinking about her conversation with her counterpart from the Coinless World, now the Yellow Draken Ranger, mainly about her feelings for Zack.

Kiya is seen taking one of the Power Eggs with an evil look on her face.

Analysis

There is some action with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #118, but overall it is more of a cool down issue. The status quo is changing slightly. Zedd has reunited with Rita, the original Omega Rangers have reunited and Tommy is reunited with Kimberly. There are still losses and allies and reinforcements have not arrived as of yet. The Hyperforce Rangers traveled throughout the Morphin Grid to gather other surviving Rangers. The Rangers have not heard back from them so it is unclear what is happening on their own front.

This is definitely Dark Specter’s first defeat in the conflict. He is unable to cross the protective barrier but with the loss of Eggs, how long will that barrier last? What is Kiya’s end game here? Her motivation when she became evil was revenge on Drakkon. Now that he is gone has she decided to willingly side with Dark Specter?

I am not excited about this. There are a very small number of female Rangers and even less female alien Rangers. I would like to see a redemption arc for Kiya where she realizes her path is not the correct one and she returns to the fold of the Rangers. Right now she is angry that she was replaced by an alien cat creature and is this jealousy going to drive her to ultimately choose the wrong side?

The art and colors are very dynamic in this issue. For an issue with very little real action, the only scenes of action are from the battle on the moon, this is a beautiful book to look at.

Final Thoughts

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #118 appears to be a turning point in this story. The Rangers are getting their footing and allies are gradually appearing. This is a good story and definitely is more grown up with the casualties that are mounting but alliances are being formed and possibly this arc is finally winding down. It is getting a little old at this point.  I feel these types of stories are better served in the Graphic Novel format and not so much in the serialized issues format that we see a lot of these stories being told today.
