As I Was A Fashion School Serial Killer #3 begins, it’s time for the midterms, and there are three named finalists for the contest: Sofie, Rennie, and Constance. While Constance is the one that wins the internship, however, Rennie is pulled aside at the end of class by Ms. Porschia. As it turns out, Rennie’s work was her favorite, but Rennie had also not entirely followed the assignment’s parameters. She tells Rennie that fashion design seems to be her calling, filling Rennie with a renewed sense of purpose.
That outside validation, combined with the realization that she has actual friends again, helps Rennie quite a bit. She’s not scratching anymore. Things are going great for her. Bodhi invites her on a group date, though mentions that Sofie might not be there because of work. However, when Rennie gets there, the only other part of their friend group she sees is Bodhi. He claims that he and Sofie are just friends. And that’s when the Urges start to creep back in again.
Rennie leaves him, pushing away that urge to kill him right then and there. But the next day, the hits just keep on coming. Sofie is called to the Dean’s office and told she’s behind on tuition, and that if she doesn’t come up with the full amount in two weeks, she’s done. With her out of classes and working more, Rennie feels lonely. Bodhi is, of course, one of the last people she’d want to talk to. Sofie texts Rennie, asking if she’d gone on a date with Bodhi. But then finally Constance comes in with her catty attitude and taunts Rennie over Sofie’s absence. More scratching. More Urges…
So I Was A Fashion School Serial Killer #3 was mainly about Rennie’s emotional development as opposed to her preferred methods of stress-relief. Her eyes visibly light up when the teacher tells her that she was meant to be a fashion designer. Between that and her taking noticeable offense at the end at Constance’s comment about being a “trailer trash fashion designer” raises some questions about her past. Was she irked about that comment only because of Sofie (who has officially become her Morality Chain), or is Rennie also from the sort of background that would make a snob like Constance start clutching her pearls at the simple prospect of sharing space with her?
Seeing Rennie happy for a moment, without the urge to scratch or to bathe in someone’s blood, was nice to see. While her extracurricular activities make for fun horror material, it’s good to see her able to step back a bit. Lean into her passion more than the stress relief. Though it’s also made clear that this can’t last. Not with people doing their best to hurt Sofie.
With Rennie responding to Sofie’s text about Bodhi, there are a few possible ways that could go. Denial is one of those, because there’s the thought of “The truth might hurt her”. The truth option could either lead to disbelief on Sofie’s part (though I’m not sure accusing Rennie of saying that out of jealousy is in Sofie’s nature) or Sofie being more upset with Bodhi. With Sofie being one of the biggest reasons Rennie didn’t end him on that night, the possibility of her “jokingly” offering to kill him isn’t exactly off the table.
But Constance…I’d be very shocked if she doesn’t just “disappear” one day, with Rennie gaining some new “leather” after a few days, feeling quite refreshed after a blood bath.
Rennie may be shown to be becoming a bit of a healthier person thanks to positive influences, but Constance is…well, she’s living up to her name. She’s quite consistent in her snobbery. It makes me wonder a bit just how much pull she has with the administrative system. I wouldn’t put it past her to pull a few strings with them to screw Sofie over. But on the other hand, she’s also the type that seems content to just sit back and taunt her because she’s a Poor, and worthy of her rich-girl scorn.
Final Thoughts
Some wonderfully-done character development in I Was A Fashion School Serial Killer #3. It’s further driven home that the true heart of this series, behind the blood and flaying, is the friendship between Rennie and Sofie. But that friendship may prove to be tested soon.
