The story so far…

The United Planets has seized control of the Green Lantern Corps and erected a massive blockade around Earth–Sector 2814. Under the control of the wicked Lord Premier Thaaros, the U.P. Corps has imposed authoritarian control across the galaxy… But a resistance faction of freedom-fighting Lanterns has formed in the shadows. Now Lantern must face Lantern in a war for control of the cosmos…

When John Stewart is attacked by a former ally thought to be dead, he seeks the help of Hal Jordan, Carol Ferris, Guy Gardner, and Caolán Shepard to retrieve his stolen Darkstar ring (the powerful MacGuffin of Green Lantern: War Journal) from Lord Premier Thaaros.

While Stewart, Jordan, and Ferris plead to a council on Thanagar to stop supporting Thaaros’ corrupt regime, Gardner and Shepard sneak into the heavily fortified dungeons of OA to rescue their imprisoned rebel allies. As luck would have it, nothing goes according to plan for either team, and the Lanterns must inevitably rely on each other to survive the overwhelming might of Lord Premier Thaaros and the United Planets.

With the combined efforts of Phillip-Kennedy Johnson and Jeremy Adams, the writers of War Journal and Green Lantern respectively, the plot lines of our two protagonists finally intertwine. The real feat is that this 48-page one-shot manages to bring uninformed readers up to speed on what they’ve missed (without slowing the pace) and still deliver some major story beats to fans eager for the next chapter of the saga. Salvador Larocca brings these heroes to the same page without sacrificing their designs. He makes terrific use of the layout by “raising” key characters out of the confines of the format, pasting them between multiple panels and gutters.

After a year of dissevered Lantern storylines, Green Lantern Civil Corps Special culminates the three estranged series of Green Lantern: War Journal, Alan Scott: The Green Lantern, and Green Lantern into one climactic book. What may appear to be an auxiliary entry into DC’s October slate is actually one of the most important, “can’t miss” chapters in the current Green Lantern Saga. Green Lantern Civil Corps Special mainly serves as both a bridge to and refresher for the previously un-integrated series. As such, it is an excellent entry point for any readers who (a) missed out on the runs during their initial publishing, and/or (b) have heard good things [perhaps from The Comic Book Spot!] and are looking to get into the series.

At long last, all of our favorite Green Lanterns are together again on the page. The operative word in the title is special; at a whopping 48 pages, this book is chock-full of cameos, team-ups, and long-awaited payoffs.
