Rafael Garcia: Henchman #4 kicks off with Rafael and Lita in bed together. He offers, once they’re dressed, to drive her to work, but she declines. He’s still shaken over the near-death experience, but had kept thinking of her. But as she gets to the door to leave, here comes…current boyfriend Gregg! Who’s been told that Rafael and Lita were formerly coworkers, and he seems to go along with it.

At the laundromat, Rafael and Kyle are getting their uniforms washed, wondering if they’ve been to that one because that could leave a DNA trail. They also discuss Gregg, and get a notification to report to work in 20 minutes. The problem? That’s how long the dryer takes!

Arriving 42 minutes late with an excuse about traffic, Raf’s squad is put on the Diversion team. While the main team goes to aid a breakout, the Diversion team is sent to hold up a bank. And at the bank, they see…Gregg! Gregg recognizes Rafael immediately, and Kyle suggests an “accident”. But instead, he goes to help with a deposit…and it turns out this bank doubles as a sperm bank. A sperm bank that contains, among other things, a deposit from Real Patriot.

Chaos ensues, Rafael takes a bullet for Gregg, the Justice Battalion arrives, explosions… But the main job? Not a hitch!

The diversion job ends with Real Patriot being killed, and bis bank deposit ending up with Maverick’s people. There’s even an award ceremony for a job well done, and Rafael’s given the chance to meet Maverick himself!

When he gets there, though…it’s Pamela in the chair. The real Mav’s been dead for two years and she took over. She swears him to secrecy. And of course, Lita finds out when they hook up again.

End volume 1.

It seems they saved the biggest action for the last installment (of this volume). I also definitely cracked up a few times while reading this one. For one thing, there’s that reminder of why they use fake names in the hench game. Gregg immediately recognizes his fiancee’s ex and calls him by name. And he’s not even shocked so much as pleasantly surprised.

Which certainly helps to sell Gregg’s character. Nice guy, perhaps a bit of a himbo. Which may also show a bit about Lita’s type. She dated/hooked back up with Rafael, and he’s a nice guy, can be a bit of a himbo, himself. But Gregg presents as a bit more professional, which is what she’d been wanting and contributed to the breakup in the first place.

Another little detail that I laughed about: there’s a full Wall of Scotts. Which leads me to wonder…were all of them of the brown-noser variety as well? It would track for this universe. But then again, so would each Scott being unpleasant in his own way. Like they’d just lost the ultimate suck-up, but his predecessor may have been the one to always throw fish in the microwave (thus depriving them of a break room after a while).

And then there’s the reveal about this bank’s nature. What was meant to be a crap job to punish Rafael and Kyle for being late ends up taking a crazy turn when they find their arch enemy’s biological material stored there, and ultimately, a victory for the team.

Somehow, I’d found myself wondering if Pamela would turn out to be Maverick. It was hidden behind such secrecy, and she seemed to know a lot about the Big Boss…That gut feeling kicked in, and when the chair turned around for the reveal, we get that payoff.

Did not see the alliance switch happen here, but I can’t say I’m disappointed, either. This conclusion was a fitting one for the story. Not that it’s truly even the end to it. Just the conclusion to volume 1. And in the event of a volume 2, I’d be happy to see where Raf’s path leads next.

Final Thoughts

Rafael Garcia: Henchman #4 brings us to the end of this part of the story, packing in the kind of humor the reader can come to expect from this team.
