Kill All Immortals II #5 opens with Erik held captive by Khan as he waits for Frey and her brothers to attack. Right on time, the Viking warrior crashes into the building, laying waste to Khan’s men. Frey frees her father and they face off with Khan and his daughter, Altani, who quickly abandons the fight.
During the battle, Khan is able to take Frey’s axe and throws it at Erik, burying the weapon in his skull. Khan tries to deliver a killing blow to Frey, as well, but Altani blocks him. The two women fight hard against the immortal Khan and Frey slashes his throat.
While he’s weakened, Frey chops down Khan’s tree, ending his immortality and allowing Altani to run her sword through his head.
Frey is joined by her brothers when she tells her dying father that she can save him if he swears loyalty to her. When he does, she breaks a branch from Khan’s tree, plants it in the nearby soil, and uses the power to heal Erik.
Kill All Immortals II #5 concludes with Salah Ad-Din receiving word that his son is dead and that Frey has killed the Khans. Angered by Frey’s threat to their existence, he calls another immortal, the Impaler, for help.
Analysis
With Kill All Immortals II #5, Zack Kaplan concludes this volume in exciting fashion. Frey has taken her place as leader of the Vikings and her path to get that title is a bloody one. Frey finally realizes that she has always been meant to lead, even though her desire has always been to help. Perhaps by leading and taking down the other immortals, she will be able to help the world, but that’s something Kaplan may explore in an upcoming volume.
The fights are violent and bloody, even more than the previous issue. A lot of red ink, digital or otherwise, was used in the creation of the encounters in these panels. For fans of extreme battles, this issue is for you.
Altani’s turn against her father to help Frey win is not altogether surprising. When she let Frey go in Kill All Immortals II #4, that should have been a big clue she was tired of Khan’s rule. While she tells Frey she’s not interested in helping hunt down other immortals, I wouldn’t be shocked to see her pop up again down the road.
I liked the ending of this issue, as there’s a clear set up for more fights ahead. The brief glimpse of Vlad the Impaler and his castle high atop a mountain is enough to get me interested in reading the next volume.
As mentioned earlier, there’s plenty of blood splattered across these pages and the artwork by Fico Ossio and Elisabetta D’Amico, along with the colors by Thiago Rocha, ramp up the intensity of the action. The kills are brutal and come just about nonstop throughout the issue.
Final Thoughts
Kill All Immortals II #5 wraps up the second volume of immortal battles with Frey the victor. She’s figured out her place and has her sights set on taking down more immortals. Be on the lookout for volume three and a showdown with Vlad the Impaler! Have fun, comic lovers!
