G.I. Joe #303 – The Story
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 begins in the Pit, as Duke has picked up a helicopter requesting for clearance to land on Cobra Island. Stalker tracked it from the Revanche. They are sending a parlay team to Cobra Island.
On the Island, the copter lands and Alpha-001 comes out to meet with Khan. Alpha-001 presents Galen 2000, it is a surgical bot they used to upgrade the androids. As a demonstration, three blue ninjas are presented. They quickly destroy one of Serpentor’s upgraded B.A.T.s. This is impressive but Serpentor wants to see the surgical bot in action. He asks for a Viper to volunteer and one does and enters the bot for upgrades.
Back at the Pit, Duke places Spirit in charge of the Pit’s defenses while he leads a sneak and peek team into Springfield. One week later in Springfield a couple is awakened by their estranged daughter. She says she wanted her parents to know she is fine but she cannot stay too long. She says she is afraid of being reported, her parents swear they will never report her.
In Utah, Spirit detects three vipers outside. He notifies Duke and Lady Jaye reports that they are upgraded versions of a Toxo-Viper, a Techno-Viper, and a regular Viper. Mainframe suggests that they send a security team to neutralize them. Duke instead orders Spirit to keep an eye on them and maybe feed them false intel.
On Cobra Island, Dr Mindbender and Khan keep track of the different Viper teams, especially a new team in the Sierras. The target is Snake Eyes and Scarlett. Because of the location, Serpentor loses contact with the team until the mission is completed. The Blue Ninjas make their move but Timber and the two Joes are awakened and prepare for the attack. Snake Eyes and Scarlett repel the attackers. The surviving Blue Ninja activates kamikaze mode and fires on Snake eyes and Scarlett.
Back on Cobra Island, Alpha-001, Mindbender and Khan get one failed video transmission from the Sierras. It appears that Timber, Snake Eyes and Scarlett are dead.
Finally this story picks up for the better. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 has espionage and military intelligence on display. In the Pit, Spirit detects the intruders and they do not even know that they have been detected while in the Sierras, it appears that the mission is a success.
It is a valid cliff hanger but I do not believe these two are dead. It is true that team members have been killed in the past but Snake eyes and Scarlett are too good. They were never surprised in their bed and they were able to mount a defense before the Blue Ninjas even entered their cabin. I think the transmission is a trick just to keep these two actions a secret in the future.
It also looks like Serpentor is willing to attack the Joes as well as Springfield. Roadblock’s suggestion in the last issue will not hold up, the Joe’s are being forced into the conflict as well.
The art is suitable for a war comic and this story is mainly a battle comic over a horror comic even though there are horror elements at play. I find that the art depicting computer screens looks just like a computer screen. Even on Cobra Island, the transmissions look like there is significant interference when connecting with the Sierras. This gives the art a realistic flair that works with this story.
As far as the action, the fight in the Sierras is dynamic and action packed. It looks like Scarlett and Snake Eyes are fighting for their lives even though both are wearing only their pajamas.
Lastly, I want to comment on the design of Alpha-001. It is a computer on the body of a snake. How appropriate is that for an organization known as Cobra.
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #303 is a marked improvement to the last issue. It has action, beautiful art and a massive cliff hanger to lead into next month’s issue. Serpentor appears to be a worthy adversary for the G.I. Joe team.
