Gail Simone Returns to DC with Eddy Barrows on Action Comics in July

Gail Simone on Action Comics with artist Eddy Barrows continues DC’s “Superman Superstars” initiative

DC Comics announced Gail Simone on Action Comics on Wednesday. Back at last year’s New York Comic Con, DC announced its Superman Superstars initiative in Action Comics. Since the launch of the initiative, we have seen the likes of Jason AaronJohn Timms and Joshua WilliamsonRafa Sandoval take their turns in writing Superman and the new members of his family. DC Comics has now announced the team who will take over the series once Williamson and Sandoval’s “House of Brainiac” ends. Writer Gail Simone and artist Eddy Barrowswill take over Action Comics for a three-issue arc beginning in July. The story arc, “Superman and the Challenge from the Stars,” looks at the early days of Superman’s career.

“I love the classic Superman cast, and this story is deliberately meant to echo my all-time favorite Superman time period,” Simone said in the press release. “We didn’t want to tell a quiet story of Superman in a diner; we wanted to have a massive threat, a war taking place all over the world, and only Superman could possibly protect his adopted planet. It is unapologetically huge in scope and fun as hell, with one of the best art teams I’ve ever worked with…Eddy Barrows, Danny Miki, and Rex Lokus on colors!”

“For me talking about Action Comics is something that goes beyond the title itself,” shared Barrows. “I remember when I was 7 years old, I was playing on the sidewalk, and suddenly I was run over by a truck, right there. I spent 3 days fighting for my life, and during that whole year that followed I remained in bed, doing lots of physiotherapy, lots of meds and exams,” Barrows added.

From DC’s press release:

The first of Simone and Barrows’s three issues kicks off when a massively powerful alien race makes Earth their arena. Superman, DC’s Man of Steel, must stand alone against impossible challenges that threaten locations all around the world and the lives of those he loves. Action Comics #1067 begins a not-to-be missed epic tale of Superman’s strength, wit, and resourcefulness in an early stage of his public career!

The main cover for Action Comics #1067 will drawn by Barrows along with Danny Miki, and Tomeu Morey. It also includes variant covers by Wes Craig, Pablo Villalobos, and Ben Oliver. The main cover will also come in foil and black-and-white versions. Check out the covers below.

Action Comics #1067 arrives in comic shops everywhere and digitally on Wednesday, July 10th. As always, stay tuned to The Comic Book Spot for all of your news and reviews in the world of comic books.
