Just after receiving the call that the monster attack was much, much worse than they’d been led to believe, Fall of the House Of Slaughter #2 begins as Cecilia tries to downplay the threat. She wants to investigate, but the election proceedings must come first.
And that’s when everyone’s phones start to blow up with notifications. Turning on the news, they see that the monster attack has been reported. Knave immediately mobilizes the other Azures to do a full blackout of all media and communications in the area to get this as under control as possible. And Cecilia decides she can’t just sit there, going to visit the school herself.
With the Old Dragon, Maxine questions his claims about Erika still being alive, feeds him, and he tells her about the founder. He wasn’t actually a traitor at all, but was instead loyal to the ideals of St. George. He says that it’d be an outsider that’s worthy of the Gold Teeth.
The full blackout is both successful and handled quickly. One of the Scarlets comes to inform Colin of that fact. And soon enough, the Violets show up with an official message involving the election, and their part in overseeing the whole thing.
Cecilia then calls Maxine for help, thus leaving the Old Dragon unattended. She distrusts Colin, to put it lightly, and wants Maxine to find the real report. She knows that Colin’s out to make her look bad.
When Cecilia reaches the school, she finds a survivor. She wants to use him as bait, but the monster’s still very close…
Things are certainly beginning to heat up, here in Fall of the House Of Slaughter #2. The first issue established that the threat was worse than claimed, but this one seems to show just how much of an issue that is. If Knave weren’t so amazingly good at her job, things may have gone rather differently for the House of Slaughter and their blackout campaign.
Fall of the House Of Slaughter #2 may be a bit shady in how they deal with the monster attack aftermath, but damn, are they efficient! I honestly really loved that whole scene’s setup, where we actually see how much time has passed. How quickly they can organize a full media/communication blackout of a city as big as Chicago, complete with throwing conspiracy theories out there to throw off anyone following it.
Colin does feel rather suspicious, as well. He had that sort of smarmy disposition in the prior installment, and in this one seems to have him reacting to the attack and the blackout with an “all according to plan” mindset. It’s his responsibility to get the accurate reports to the hunters, and that report was very much not accurate.
Cecilia is also onto him, so if it’s true that he’s a rat, then I appreciate it coming up around the halfway point of the story rather than being saved for the end. If not, I wonder who else it could possibly be.
Art-wise, the expressions and poses in Fall of the House Of Slaughter #2 were pretty well-rendered. The expression on Cecilia’s face on that opening splash page? A priceless “Oh, crap…” look. And then there’s that cocky, accomplished pose that Knave shows off after she’s orchestrated the blackouts.
Very curious as to who will win the Gold Teeth now, as well. “Outsider” could apply to Erika, of course. But it’s still not clear exactly were she even is at this point in the story. It may also be applicable to Maxine, but not quite sure, either way. One had left the order because she, like the founder, wasn’t a fan.
Final Thoughts
Things are certainly getting interesting in the House of Slaughter, and I, for one, can’t wait to see how it all develops. The parts with Colin and the Old Dragon add to the intrigue, and issue 3 looks like it’d promise to show Cecilia in action.
