After a brief opening depicting Adam and Eve being tempted by the snake, Event Horizon: Inferno #5 segues into the demon urging Daniel to kill his brother to achieve his goal. Without hesitation, he pulls the trigger and turns his fury toward Annabelle.

Meanwhile, the ship is trying to keep anyone from leaving, even as Starck, Skylar, and Rob search for a way out. Unable to take another moment of this, Skylar tries to run for it and instead ends up falling out of view. And so, Starck goes to look for her.

Daniel shoots Annabelle and demands that the demon take him to Hell. But before he can take his rightful place there, he needs to murder an innocent person. As he wonders where he’s going to find one of those, his go-to victim Skylar resurfaces, having landed in that area. She’s also obtained a weapon. She comes across Annabelle and Koji. Annabelle is only able to survive because Koji gave her his heart, and the two women start to walk away…only for Daniel to show up.

Starck is getting close, but runs into Spider Demon Weir and his fleshy webs.

Those same webs end up holding Daniel in place while Skylar shoots him. And the demon tells Skylar to run.

Starck manages to escape Weir thanks to utilizing the time loop, and finds Skylar. She tells her to get Rob and escape, while she’ll stay with the ship and Annabelle intends to close the Hell Gate.

They get to the escape ship, and it almost doesn’t work out…but the gate is soon closed with that ship outside of it.

As for Daniel, he comes to find that he’s not, despite all appearances to the contrary, in Hell. He’s somewhere worse.

After everything Skylar has been put through, it’s rather satisfying to see her come out of this whole ordeal alive. While it might have been good to see that with Starck, as well, it’s also been a couple of centuries since she ended up in this situation. A lot of things can change in just a fraction of that time.

Also, in helping to ensure that Skylar and the last of the Tank Tops can escape, she gets a chance to make up for the guilt she’s been dealing with in leaving Miller behind all those years ago.

As a whole, I loved seeing Annabelle, who had been created by Durante as a replacement wife, get her own arc and development. She was literally designed as a means to an end or two for him. But her heart to heart with the Event Horizon helps her find some level of agency, which she ultimately uses to help the other woman her husband victimized and helps keep the ship contained.

There’s also something to be said about Daniel as a person. He’s never been shown to be a good guy at all, given that his first in-story action was to try sacrificing Skylar to summon a demon. But when a ship with connections to Hell, and a demon are trying to help the two women he’s abused most, it makes you wonder.

The next chapter of the Event Horizon saga, from what I’ve heard, deals with how Heaven’s even worse than Hell. So maybe this entity guiding Daniel’s actions is actually an angel? It would explain their willingness to help.

The artwork in Event Horizon: Inferno #5, as always, was pretty well done. My favorite aspect of it may have to be that final chase between the Event Horizon herself and the Virgil. Thanks to her exposure to Hell, the ship doesn’t have a regular nose, but more of a gaping maw with a few rows of teeth. That huge panel in mostly reds and warm grays with that little cool spot representing the Virgil making her escape is a nice, intense visual, and I love it.

Final Thoughts

Event Horizon: Inferno #5 brings this chapter to a fitting conclusion and I can’t recommend it enough. It is packed with action and nightmare fuel, with a delightfully disturbing setup to what’s next.
