DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo #1  starts off with a bit of celestial channel surfing, before the remote settles upon what seems to be the middle (if not near-end) of the battle between Wonder Woman and Lobo.

Backing up a bit, the two combatants are introduced in the ring, shown getting a bit of preparation in…and both thoroughly confident in their abilities to beat the other one to a pulp. She gets a few solid hits in, before he retaliates. She gains a small amount of ground, but he ultimately gets the first KO.

Next round: Wonder Woman has donned her armor and brought a few of her sisters in, as both of these aspects constitute her ideal battle form. Lobo, meanwhile, has taken on a more conventionally-attractive form. The two factions trade blows, and he once again gains the upper hand…until he finds that Wonder Woman has gotten a hold of his ride, and is barreling toward him with it and a sword, wiping that cocky grin off his face and giving her a KO.

And so, we come to the tiebreaker round. There are a few minor competitions before they ultimately go into a gladiatorial fight. In their fight, she manages to get a hold of his chain/hook weapon and lodge the hook into his back. He pulls it out, and returns the favor, all the while boasting that she’ll never be able to kill him because of the deal he has with The Almighty.

Round Three… FIGHT!!! (DC Comics)

And this, as it turns out, is enough for The Almighty to decide that their contract is no longer valid, as it’s ripped up, Wonder Woman regains control of the situation, and gets that second KO out of three required to win.

As DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo #1 comes to an end, back at the Watchtower, Darkseid-Gold has gotten out from under the pile of Booster Gold doubles, and turns his ire on World Forger…

As I read DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo #1, I picked up on a couple things in particular. First and foremost, it felt like the creative team enjoyed working on this one. Second is how appropriate it is for one of the combatants to have a connection to Greek mythology, only for her opponent’s true undoing to be his own hubris. That’s just such a classic downfall, and to see it play out with his patron literally tearing their contract in half was an entertaining aspect.

There’s no question that the stakes for this entire KO event are incredibly high, what with the entire freaking universe being in the balance, and all. Having looked at some of what came before round three, those fights had more of a sense of drama to them. It’s built on the concept of having all of these powerful beings fight, sometimes in a brother-against-brother sort of way.

But this battle leans into that “powerful beings duking it out” aspect, with neither combatant betraying any sort of obvious anxiety over what happens when one inevitably loses, or if neither of them becomes the King Omega. No, they’re both right there in the moment, more than willing to fight it out.

The characterization was done well, with Wonder Woman’s warrior mindset in full force, and Lobo’s personality in general. Even if someone’s new to the character, right away, it’s easy enough to tell that he’s not the most altruistic guy out there.

I liked the artwork in DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo #1 as well. The style fit this round’s tone really well, with its stylized nature. Some art highlight: the poses during the fight are just the right amount of dynamic, and the expressions. The look in Lobo’s eyes as he realizes that his own ride is coming for him is not only well-executed, but immensely satisfying.

Final Thoughts

Round three of the DC K.O. event is here, and it’s an entertaining one. It may not be as steeped in dramatic tension as some others, but it’s still an entertaining experience.
