In this issue of Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell, we wrap up the return of Matt Murdock to Hell’s Kitchen.

Continuing on from Issue 2 Matt can be seen bounding across the New York skyline enjoying his recently regained powers. Then with a flip of the page we’re back with Bullseye and as usual he’s up to no good. He has an aged popular character tied up that looks like he’s been tortured to the brink of death. I massively enjoyed this part of the story so I won’t spoil who it was that Bullseye had strung up.

After winding up his prisoner Bullseye leaves. The prisoner manages to escape and get himself kitted out the the hilt in a huge robotic suit. He has to deal with a few of Bullseye’s henchmen before he can free Tyra. Once they’re dealt with he is thanked by Tyra and we rejoin Matt.

Matt finds himself in a bit of a pickle as he begins to lose his powers. They dip in and out meaning they’re wearing off which isn’t a great thing for his final showdown with Bullseye.

Up to this point this issue has been an absolute rollercoaster of retribution and payback. I’ve absolutely loved it. Soule sure knows how to put together an action packed final issue, in some ways I wish this was a continuing arc, but I think as to be careful as to not make it feel dragged out the limited series was the best way to go for a story arc like this.

McNiven’s artwork has been a welcome change to the usual styles that I go for when reading. It very much did give me Frank Miller vibes from the first issue. McNiven’s use of close ups and different perspectives really helps with the fast pacing of this issue due to all the action, the way in which he’s approached his layouts has been perfect. I also liked the incorporation of the many different panel sizes, leaving larger panels for the likes of city perspectives and to show the size of certain things that show up throughout the issue. I also like the details of the skyline that is so important to a building hopping street level hero like Daredevil. I also loved the pencils of Matt when in his suit but the suit had suffered from serious rips and tears, they are very much realistic.

The colour choices, especially towards the end of the issue were fantastic. They helped show light in a different way to how light is normally perceived in a comic book and for that reason I really dug it! The shading throughout the issue has been fantastic too, adding depth and contour where it’s needed most to help accentuate the images. Truly fantastic work from all Artists involved!

Final Thoughts

Daredevil: Cold Day In Hell #3 is a perfect wrap up to the limited series. It is definitely been my book of the week from my pull list. Although I was hesitant while reading the first issue as the art was a little different to what I normally go for in a book. Though as the story developed I grew to love the art style for this particular kind of story. The whole thing gave me Dark Knight Returns vibes, the plot of the story, it was an older hero coming back to make things right, and the artwork in this really reminded me of Miller’s Dark Knight Returns too. Highly recommend this series to everyone.
