The planet is toast. There are no reinforcements. For Wolverine… all that’s left is revenge!

Responsible for the brutal deaths of his allies and the degradation of life on Earth as we know it, the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants has split across the globe. With the reluctant help of Forge and Dani Moonstar, Wolverine tracks down those who have wronged him, starting with Mastermind.

At the heart of all great Wolverine stories is the central question of identity: is he man or beast? Hero or anti-hero? Now, with the world crumbling around him, Logan’s choice to pursue vengeance is indicative of his more animal nature. As Forge gravely warns him “Retribution is a dark path… and revenge is a master no man should serve.” Rather than give in to those motivations, he crafted something new in the wake of such devastation. “The world ended, and instead of surrendering to despair, I steeled myself to raising up something new… and gathered those around me who could see the dream for what it was.” As much fun as it may be to witness Wolverine’s revenge tour, the story begs the question: what is at the end of that rope? As the old saying goes, “An eye for an eye will leave the whole world blind.”

With just two issues to date, Wolverine: Revenge is without a doubt, one of the most fun series in recent years –– built on the trifecta of great art, great writing, and a great premise to bring them together. It’s simple, it’s bloody, it’s a helluva good time! At the helm are Greg Capullo (New 52! Batman) and Jonathan Hickman (Ultimate Spider-Man), two powerhouses in comics! Aided by Tim Townsend (a titan in his own right), cool North Dakota nights are ink-drenched, bright desert landscapes are sweltering –– and Wolverine, at the center of it all, is portrayed as a stout ball of muscle, body hair, and unfettered rage. It goes without saying that Capullo’s work is unparalleled; if you removed any and all text, you’d still have a clear and compelling story, completely accessible with just angle, expression, palette, and design.

Hickman’s dialogue is punchy and full –– the kind of gruff Wolvy lines you mumble to yourself when flipping the page. The story moves fast, aware of its five-issue limited run status, but leaves nothing on the table. In issue #2, Wolverine is claws-first, ask-questions-never. Logan is every bit as violent as fans expect, but also very clever, and doesn’t just lean on his might. Facing off against powerful enemies that have bested him before, he won’t make the same mistakes twice – which gives way to a great, dynamic, suspenseful read.
