Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 is loaded with action. In fact, it’s almost non-stop, cover-to-cover Star Trek-fighting goodness. Whereas the second issue was an appetizer to warm up the voracious reader, this one serves up the main course. Communication and teamwork rule the day in this story and the crew of the Omega do well in that area as they enter into battle with a group of Klingons bent on ending Starfleet and the Federation.
Writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly quickly bring the book up to speed, juggling many new characters while ensuring each gets a moment in the spotlight. Though the story is still in the “getting to know you” phase, Lanzing and Kelly don’t hesitate to hit the accelerator on the action. They maintain a nice balance between the new crew’s different strengths and weaknesses. Specifically, Captain Sato struggles with the realities of combat, having only known peace, while Captain Kirk effectively applies his “old school” approach to war in the future without hesitation.
The page layouts are anything but stagnant. Each page is arranged in a different configuration of panels, with some beautiful spreads and splash pages mixed in for good measure and to great effect. The artwork from the duo of Adrian Bonilla and Heather Moore continues to impress. Their pages come alive with motion and color, especially in action shots. The final-page reveal is one that will have you questioning what’s going on, though, because it’s not one that’s highly telegraphed. It’s a cliffhanger that will leave you wanting the next issue immediately.
Final Thoughts
Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 ramps up the excitement in a big way. While it closes out the first chapter of the overall story in a strong manner, it sets the table for what’s to come. Star Trek: The Last Starship #3 is on Final Order Cutoff on Monday, November 3rd and releases Wednesday, December 17th, so don’t hesitate to add it to your pull list.
