Justice League Unlimited #11 finds Mister Terrific
(Michael Holt) single-handedly dealing with a Parademon infestation on the Watchtower as the creatures literally burst out of the walls to attack him.

Terrific displays some remarkable evasive tactics while radioing for back up. Flash responds, informing Terrific that his team are dealing with the fallout from the injuries that Time Trapper (a svelte, future Doomsday) suffered last issue. Time Trapper’s body is leaking volatile temporal energies that are eating away at the Watchtower itself. Metamorpho works furiously to patch up Time Trapper, but despite his molecular malleability, Metamorpho’ proximity to the energies is taking a toll on him as well.

On another part of the Watchtower, Terrific’s reinforcements are quickly incapacitated, and with Red Tornado currently trying to maintain the station’s key systems, Terrific is left to deal with the infestation alone (although he does have his T spheres).

Meanwhile, below ground in the country of Markovia, Power Girl, Captain Atom, Cajedo (a demonic, good guy werewolf?) and Geo-Force contend with Darkseid’s twisted version of the Legion of Super heroes. Darkseid’s team is formidable, but the heroes send them tumbling towards the Earth’s core (mostly Geo-Force’s doing).

An enraged Captain Atom chases after Dark Legion, nearly succumbing to the effects of Darkseid’s influence the further down he travels. Cajedo yanks Atom back with his mystic chain (much different than Ghost Rider’s). The entire group can feel the darkness calling to them from below as they head to the surface.

Meanwhile, repairs to the Watchtower are barely keeping pace with the devastation caused by the temporal energy leak, as Terrific leads the Parademon horde down to Time Trapper’s location and forces them into the path of the unstable temporal field (with Flash’s help), and the Parademons disintegrate.

Justice League Unlimited #11 ends with Time Trapper on the mend, as Superman broadcasts a priority alert to every member of the JLU, (as he appears to have found the long missing Booster Gold).

Analysis

Justice League Unlimited #11 is a fast-paced thrill ride where League members continue dealing with the fallout from Grodd’s gambit in the “We are Yesterday” crossover. Writer Mark Waid jumps from one growing disaster to the next, each with a disparate group of heroes who power through despite the overwhelming odds. Waid’s skill at streamlining the plots into a coherent narrative are on full  display.

So much plot is packed into Justice League Unlimited #11 that it is difficult to encapsulate everyone’s contributions (sorry Barda and Thunder). Mister Terrific is the star player in this story, as his gift at improvisation helps solve two problems at once, utilizing both brain and brawn. The closest co-star is probably Red Tornado who features prominently even in voice over.

Time Trapper wakes up in time to dispense a few sage words but his impact was mostly felt while he was unconscious (including eliminating the Parademons).

Guest artist Carmine Di Giandomenico ably fills in with gorgeous visuals that illustrate the scope and scale of each threat, along with the actions of the heroes who who attempt to contain them. The multiple action sequences featuring Mister Terrific put the hero’s formidable skills on display. Giandomenico’s storytelling also captures the frightening intensity of the Parademon horde.

Tamra Bonvillain’s colors help to differentiate between the various sequences (subterranean hellscape, dream world, space station under siege). Both artists excel at depicting the numerous locations in Justice League Unlimited #11.

Final Thoughts

Justice League Unlimited #11 continues the title’s high quality story and art, featuring more than a dozen characters, but focusing on the two most important to the plot. The final page (leading out of the Superman ongoing title) sets up both “The Omega Act” one-shot, and the upcoming “King Omega” crossover event.
