In this review of Supernatural #2, Sam and Dean encounter something that doesn’t tend to follow them very often (good luck) and something they deal with on a daily basis (a ghost).

Supernatural #2 kicks off with two brief cold open flashbacks: in 1961, we see a guy toss a suspiciously human-sized bundle into a ditch. An earring falls to the ground, and he grabs that. A week before the story proper starts, a guy breaks into a pawn shop and dies in the process, with that same earring being among his would-be loot.
In the present, Sam and Dean reach the casino. As Dean embarks upon a losing streak, Sam walks around and sees a woman being bothered by someone. He steps in, claiming to be a cousin of hers so he backs off. He and Callie start talking, and he mentions that his brother’s luck has been crap.
But soon, to everyone’s (except for Callie’s) surprise, Dean’s luck does a complete 180. Some suspect that he’s cheating, figure out he’s using a fake ID…but not how he’s been cheating. So, they just let him walk and offer to pay for dinner for his trouble.
Sam introduces Dean to Callie, letting him know that she’s the reason for his good luck. Callie has a bit of a grudge against the casino, and says that she can help them even more if they help her find her missing earring.
After a trip to the pawn shop and some research at the library, the guys figure out that Callie’s a ghost. Dean’s hesitant about helping a ghost out, but Sam’s way more sympathetic and willing to get the earring back to her.
The casino’s owner McCatrick is the subject of Callie’s ire, as he’d been the one to dump the body and pawn the earring.
Dean drops the earring into his pocket, and Callie provides some luck to everyone at that casino, informing McCatrick that as long as he has that earring, everyone’s winning until that casino goes under. He rushes outside, where his own luck immediately runs out and he has a fatal run-in with the Winchesters’ car.
Callie offers to let the guys take her earring, but they decline and head off.
The overall story for Supernatural #2 was a fun one. It’s not very often that good luck touches the Winchesters’ lives, but when it does, it’s sort of cathartic. And the guys aren’t any strangers to ghosts. But this was one of those instances where the ghost was relatively benign.
Sure, it’s entirely possible (if not probable) that she was responsible for killing the would-be pawn shop thief at the beginning, but she only seems to be out to get those that have actually slighted her in some way and not just lashing out at anyone that happens to get too close. For anyone else in that casino (who she doesn’t hold any apparent animosity toward), the only sort of impact she seems to have is giving them a boost of really good luck. Even if it is as a means of getting back at McCatrick, it made so many people’s day. Definitely appreciate that combination of revenge and benevolence.
The reveal of Callie being a ghost has a few subtle clues. It’s one thing to turn down a drink from a guy (particularly when it turns out to be the guy that threw your body into a freaking ditch all those decades prior), but declining food in general… It doesn’t seem like much at first, but on a reread, it makes perfect sense.
As with the prior issue, the writing in Supernatural #2 definitely nails the vibe of those early years, feeling exactly like an episode of the era.
Now the artwork is noticeably different from the first issue. It has a slightly more stylized bent to it. It was still well-done, but it did feel a bit odd to me at first (particularly with Sam’s design). The style used this time around made for some great expressions, like Sam’s utter puzzlement when Dean actually started winning. And there’s a nice intensity to Callie’s eyes when she goes to proposition the guys for their help.
Final Thoughts
Supernatural #2 is a good read, no matter if you’re already a fan or if you’re a newcomer. There’ll be something to enjoy about this one. It was a good solid issue, with an interesting ghost story at the center.
