In this review of One World Under Doom #8, this is it, the Marvel heroes’ last stand against the indomitable will and supreme power of Emperor Doom. Valeria Richards plays a big role in this final gambit against her godfather, just not the way anyone might have suspected.

One World Under Doom #8 continues in the aftermath of the Emperor Doom/Reed Richards battle in the Astral Plane. With Richards defeated, Doom still must contend with dozens of Marvel heroes as Maria Hill employs numerous strategies to topple the Sorcerer Supreme (there’s over 100 and counting). In the midst of the chaos, there comes a call from Doom’s goddaughter, Valeria Richards, which he answers, (while still fighting).
In a specially designed “mindscape”, Doom has a private conversation with Valeria as he continues to fend off attacks back on Earth. Valeria starts by thanking Doom for not killing her father, and attempts to reason with her godfather to give up his quest to conquer everyone. She asks what his endgame is, (to which Doom gives an unintentionally prophetic reply). Valeria is spot on in saying that Doom has something to prove, which irks him.
A disappointed Doom sends Valeria back home, so he can focus fully on clobbering the remaining heroes into submission (which he does). After throwing every power combination Maria Hill can think of at Doom, the Emperor has had enough, and fully cuts loose. Despite this devastating attack Richards and the others deploy their own endgame, channeling their powers into Beta Ray Bill’s Stormbreaker, wielded by Ben Grimm.

The gambit works for maybe a minute before Doom redirects the attack by absorbing all of the combined power into his suit, and unleashing his energy-infused armor as weaponized projectiles against the entire group of heroes, with devastating results.
One World Under Doom #8 ends with Doom triumphant at last, only for the Emperor to realize that Valeria Richards also appears to have been tragically caught in the crossfire.
Analysis
What the heck just happened? One World Under Doom #8 truly delivers, not only the multiple smackdowns, but also the important quiet moments between Valeria and Doom. It was predicted from the beginning that Valeria would be involved in Doom’s downfall, but not like this. Writer Ryan North has kept up the OWUD twists and turns, advancing the plot and shifting the battlefield with each chapter, but this is unexpected.
Is Valeria really dead? That final panel is hard to ignore, but more than likely this is the heroes’ true final gambit to shock Doom out of his megalomania. The Marvel heroes unleashed the full might of their combined abilities in every thinkable combination to no avail, but they probably expected that and had to put on a show or Doom would suspect treachery.
The heroes couldn’t hope to match him in power, but they could put themselves in the line of fire and pull off a Psy Ops ruse, making Doom believe he had mortally wounded the only living being he cared for (that seems like a solid Maria Hill plan). Valeria is Doom’s fatal flaw. Of course, this could also be just Valeria and her brother Franklin, but there is no way Marvel would allow.
Regardless, One World Under Doom #8 packs a metaphorical punch in more ways than one. “Sound and fury signifying nothing” is an apt metaphor (not mine), with Doom and Valeria as the main focus of the issue. Doom is often written as a one-note character, a foil, an arrogant mad scientist craving ultimate power, but occasionally, as in this series, Doom shows heart and the small frightened boy who misses his mother.
Doom wants to be seen as a benevolent ruler, (and he’s willing to use force to make it happen). Valeria’s argument against this approach exposes the flaw in his plan, and that even though he is capable of maintaining complete control, it is the old adage of not whether you can, but whether you should.
R.B. Silva’s art continues to impress, especially his more minimalist approach with the quiet scenes in Doom’s mindscape, as well as the bedlam from Doom’s final attack against the heroes. Those eight inset panels accompanied by David Curiel’s stark green coloring and Travis Lanham’s sound effects add up to a violently shocking coup de grace. Also Lanham captures Valeria’s frantic messaging of Doom with the repetitive sequence of her name in Morse Code, “Val”.
How this series ultimately wraps, and what happens next in the planned epilogue (along with the Fantastic Four monthly title) will need to show the far-reaching effects of Doom’s power grab, and how it will alter the Marvel Universe going forward, (as detailed in the initial listing of One World Under Doom). Will Ryan North stick the landing?
Final Thoughts
One World Under Doom #8 is full of carefully laid plans, epic spectacle and dazzling art, but it hits hardest in the quiet moments between two key characters, and in that one unexpected, shockingly unbelievable final page reveal.
