JSA #10 opens on Kid Eternity as she’s met by the ghosts of various JSA members. They inform her that only she could save the current JSA roster, though she’s uncertain as to how.
Meanwhile, in the Badlands of Hell, Hawkman and Hawkgirl are discussing Kid Eternity’s location, and how to go about retreiving her…when Gentleman Ghost and crew show up for a fight.
At the Brownstone, Jade and Alan demand to know what happened to the real Obsidian. But having gotten what he wanted from his ruse, Sorrow attacks Alan. Thankfully for Alan and Jade, however, backup shows up in the form of Jesse and Flash. Once Sorrow takes off to regroup with the rest of the Injustice Society, the group discusses their next move. One set will go to retrieve Beth, the other will go to intercept the Injustice Society.
Speaking of the Injustice Society, they’ve reached Blackhawk Island, looking for the secret museum. As Shadow Thief hunts for that, Ruby expresses her misgivings about joining them. She’d mainly done so to get information about her father from Wotan.
They reach the museum, get a hold of the spear, and Sorrow gets there in time to warn them that the Justice Society is on their way.
Kid Eternity is introduced to Mr. Keeper, who informs her that she’s not the first (or last, for that matter) Kid Eternity. Not only this, but she learns how she can possibly help the JSA: by channelling the abilities of the deceased JSA members. Which she implements soon after by reuniting with Hawkman and Hawkgirl when Gentleman Ghost and Solomon Grundy managed to get the better of them. She channels Dr. Fate’s powers for that.
Back at the Island, the Justice Society arrives just in time to discover that the Spear has, in fact, fallen into the wrong hands…
At first, it took me a bit to get into JSA #10. Because of there being so many clusters of characters in one story, each with their own subplot, I had to take some time to adjust. That being said, I think this pushed things along fairly well. It didn’t focus on every group, but it did pick up on the portions in Hell after last month’s followed Beth and Obsidian’s ordeal for a bit.
Sorrow gaining that information that the Injustice Society really shouldn’t have is the centerpiece of this whole thing, and we see it come to a fairly tense payoff. There are some people that can be trusted with a powerful object like the Spear of Destiny, and anyone that’s part of a group called the “Injustice Society” probably isn’t one of them, so Wotan getting a hold of it? A definite “Oh crap…” moment, leading to a cliffhanger.
The other major thread in this issue: Kid Eternity and the reveal of her role in stopping the Injustice Society. To see that she could channel the powers of the JSA members that’d already passed was a good way, I think, to make sure they’re able to join the battle, in a way. There’s been that statement about comic books that nobody actually stays dead (with a few exceptions), and this is a good way to still keep the characters and their abilities around without having to figure out reasons for a resurrection, or minimizing their loss.
As for the artwork in JSA #10, I really appreciated some of the color schemes. They definitely added to the atmosphere of their settings. A standout is in the scenes with Kid Eternity, Mr. Keeper, and the ghosts. There’s a cool tone throughout the whole thing that sort of evokes the eerie vibes of death, whereas the Badlands of Hell scenes keep things mostly warm (though Gentleman Ghost, fittingly, looks like he’d be right at home in the cool-toned locale), apt for…well, Hell.
Final Thoughts
There’s a lot going on, and plenty to like, with some great story progressions and well-done artwork.
