This Review Contains Spoilers

Captain America #4 begins as Captain America saves Darius Wolf just before he is executed, challenging Doom in front of his subjects. Meanwhile, David Colton and Julie Slate find the last two hostages. Suddenly, Julie kills one, explaining that the United States funded Doom’s rise to power, and their orders were to ensure the hostages didn’t talk. David fights her to protect the final hostage as Steve continues to fight Doctor Doom.

Doom’s attack injures and kills his own civilians, and he uses Steve’s distraction as he tries to protect them to grab him and prepare the finishing blow. But Steve is able to use the device given to him by Reed Richards to power down his armor and destroy his mask, forcing Doom to flee as his people turn against him.

Meanwhile, David stops Julie’s pursuit of the final hostage with his shield, killing her in the process. When Steve radios in, David refuses to leave, vowing to stay and “kill them all.”

Analysis

The majority of Captain America #4 is fighting, and the composition of the two simultaneous battles is well done. There is weight in every movement, and various angles and locations keep the action fresh. The backgrounds of each fight are often different colors, so there’s no confusion whenever it switches back and forth. The reader can tell just by sight that they are in a different location than the panel before.

Though Captain America #4 focuses on fighting, there are also several moments where the characters are contemplative. Those moments are shown on their faces. Every expression is drawn with care, and they help create many amazing moments throughout the issue.

The back and forth between Captain America fighting Doom and Colton fighting Slate was nicely crafted: Two Captain Americas fighting different people that represented the same enemy. The reveal that America funded Doom’s rise to power was an interesting twist founded in history, and it has set up a position for Steve to uncover the truth and decide how to proceed in this new world.

This has all come together for a great setup for the next issue, and it will be interesting to see how this all wraps up.

Final Thoughts

Captain America #4 focuses on combat, so there is little story progression, but it is still a strong issue with interesting techniques, great art, and good character moments.
