Having not really been a big a fan of previous issues of Captain America, I was a bit skeptical reading this issue. Though when you’ve got a talent such as Chip Zdarsky writing the story I’m all ears or in this case eyes!
Having Steve Rogers return to the Marvel Universe is definitely a familiarity I’m all for. Especially when it’s been rebooted in a way such as this. Having Cap come back in a time of established Superheroes and the Avengers really does make for an interesting concept and I can’t wait to see where it leads.
Zdarsky kicks Captain America #1 off with some epic action and pulls you right in to the story, just how a Captain America title should be. We start with a Bike chase through the streets of New York, it’s a typical but expected trait from a Captain America book and artist Valerio Schiti encapsulates it perfectly, the perspective of which we see Rogers hurtling through the streets of New York adds to the quick pace and perfectly depicts the speed in which the bikes are travelling at.

After Cap captures the fugitive, he’s met by Iron Man—no longer Tony Stark, but still funding the Avengers. Iron Man urges him to join, but Cap declines, saying he already serves in the army. At the Pentagon, tests reveal he was part of the original super soldier program. The scientists and officers are shocked, yet impressed.
Once Cap’s brief interrogation from the senior officers is over he is welcomed back to the United States Army where he is given his first mission brief. This leads to him seeking out the Fantastic Four, mostly for Mr Fantastic himself though, as Cap has a few questions regarding his target on his new assignment. Once their conversation is over Cap returns to the Army where he’s introduced to the new task force that he’ll be working with, who go under the identity of the Howling Commandos. Where they prepare to undergo their first task.
In Captain America #1 we’re also given a backstory to a young soldier who seems to be the victim of bulling by his fellow soldiers and is beaten fairly ferociously by his superior officer. Though his determination to get back up again, over and over doesn’t go unnoticed and gets him also added to the task for with Cap and the others. Though he is also sporting a look very similar to the traditional costume of Captain America.
I cannot wait to see where this story goes and as far as Captain America Stories go, consider me converted, never before have I been so engrossed in a Cap story. Zdarsky has done an absolute impeccable job with Captain America #1. I was gripped from page one and the art style of Valerio Schiti compliments it perfectly. Roll on next month, I can’t wait to see what happens!
