Blood Type #1 starts off with an introduction from a horror host: The Grave-Digger, before it goes into Ada’s journey. She’s been brought aboard a ship. The sailors thought they’d saved a stranded woman from the ocean. It turned out she was just in it for the blood buffet.
She keeps the captain alive as her thrall during the voyage, letting him take the fall for the murders of his crew as she disembarks.
She arrives at a resort, where she knows she can find plenty of fresh blood. She encounters one guy with the intent to feed, only to learn that there’re more vampires in the area. He tells her about them in exchange for his life, about how a truly awful tourist had stumbled upon them and was drained. But she figures out that he’s not quite telling her the truth and feeds, anyway.
But at the same time, she realizes she’s not the only hunter around, and not wanting that kind of competition, takes her new thrall and goes looking. She’s led to a group of other resort workers, finds that the “tourist” was another worker. And these workers find out what she is, assume she’s the same vampire that drained their coworker, and go on the attack.
As Blood Type #1 comes to an end, Ada dives off of a cliff, grabs the guy that’d led her there on the way down, promising to kill him later. Right now, she needs answers.
So, Blood Type #1 already promises something fresh just from the concept. EC titles tend to be horror/sci-fi anthologies, while Blood Type is a single story that’ll be told across 4 issues. The usual style for their anthologies is to have a horror host (Cryptkeeper in Tales From The Crypt, for instance) introduce a few stories in one issue.
This story draws from a previous entry in an issue of “Epitaphs From The Abyss”, also hosted by The Grave-Digger. And in the grand tradition of comics with horror hosts, we get some lovely sprinklings of dark humor. The opening monologue? Brimming with the sort of alliteration one would expect from an EC horror host. It sets the tone for what’s coming.
I haven’t read the exact issure of “Epitaphs From The Abyss” that features Ada’s initial story (yet), so any characterization for her I’m going by so far is from this issue. So far, though, she intrigues me. With a group of targets, she’s smart enough to leave one alive-enough to serve her until they’re no longer needed. She also makes sure to get them alone before feeding. The trouble only really starts when she finds out that she’s not the only blood-sucker in the area. That level of pride, where she needs to be the apex predator, can only lead to trouble.
One little element that Blood Type #1 worked in in a neat way, I think, was Ada asking a rat for directions. In Dracula, it’s mentioned that Dracula could command various creatures, including rats. So her being able to communicate with a rat for a moment is a fun nod to that.
Story-wise, I’m curious about the other vampire (or possibly ghoul, depending on just how much this guy had lied about). Is there only one? Are we in for some good-old-fashioned Evil VS Evil down the line, or is one of the two factions a bit darker in methods than the other? So many questions about just that, and we’re only through the first issue so far.
Art-wise, I’d say that Blood Type #1 has a dark, semi-realistic aesthetic that works well for the story. The colors aren’t overly-saturated (and become even less so during the flashbacks), The most vibrant hue, fittingly for this title, is red, and the desaturation of everything else helps that to really pop.
The variant covers have some fun stuff going on with them, as well, where they play with some styles that still fit the whole “creepy blood-drenched fun” vibe. The main cover is no exception to this, immediately giving a prospective reader a glimpse into who they’re about to be following for four issues.
Final Thoughts
Blood Type #1 is a slight break from the traditional EC Comics format, but still packed with the blood, chills, and gallows humor that can be expected from the line. If you’re a fan of vampires, sink your teeth into this one.
