At the end of Absolute Superman #12, the Battle of Kansas kicked off and this issue opens with that battle raging. The people of Smallville are fighting with everything they’ve got against the Lazarus Corp. Fortunately, they’ve got the assistance of Superman and Sol, the Kryptonian AI made of Sunstone Crystals, but it’s not enough. Smallville is decimated. Through a six-week time jump, the true devastation becomes evident in Absolute Superman #13. Lois, Jimmy, and Sol are working to broadcast a signal out to anyone who can help.

Absolute Superman #13 uses a non-linear structure, jumping across six weeks to reveal key interactions, like when Lois and Jimmy realized they were fighting on the wrong side. We learn that Superman is fighting constantly but cannot recharge his powers because Lazarus has blocked the sun with clouds. A powerful moment occurs when the local mail carrier, Zed Cochran, confesses to betraying Superman, leading to his torture by Brainiac. Despite his obvious anger, Superman restrains himself, shakes the apologizing man’s hand, and, without outright forgiveness, shows he understands the situation.

Nearing the final act of the issue, just as Superman is reaching his breaking point in the fights, Talia al Ghul and Brainiac infiltrate Sol’s defenses, turning the AI protector from red to purple. Brainiac attacks Superman, further depleting his strength. Once Kal is restrained, Ra’s al Ghul stands over him with a sword made of kryptonite, vowing to destroy everyone Superman loves before having him beg to become his son and servant.

Analysis

Writer Jason Aaron continues to weave a different, yet still powerful, version of Superman than we’re immediately familiar with. The moments in this issue between him and Zed are a good example of this. Kal is visibly upset at the news and has to tell himself not to crush the man’s hand, but he accepts the apology. He fights endlessly to save Smallville, but questions himself for caring. He knows the world needs a Superman, but doesn’t believe that he’s it. This inner conflict is highly pronounced throughout the story and increases the drama playing out on the pages.

There is also a good Lois moment right before Brainiac infects Sol where she’s telling Superman how important he is to the people of Smallville. Jason Aaron is telling this story through her eyes and it looks like he’s building up to have Lois reveal her feelings for Superman. Aaron may take it in a different direction, but I got the feeling that’s what Lois wanted to say right before Brainiac attacks. Of course, this would parallel the usual relationship between the two, so perhaps this is just a tease.

The art in Absolute Superman #13 by Rafa Sandoval and Ulises Arreola remains consistently excellent. Their long tenure on the book provides strong visual continuity. The beautifully detailed characters and thorough action shots show great care in every panel. The vibrant explosions and diverse color palette keep each page fresh and engaging. Notably, the final-page reveal is perfectly composed and brilliantly colored, effectively conveying the danger Superman faces from Ra’s al Ghul and the kryptonite sword.
